Summary: Ciaran muses on the difficulties posed by gloves.

Gloves were a hassle, when you got down to it.

At first the only real problem seemed to be how slippery they are. He nearly broke his toe once when a particularly heavy book slid from his satin-covered fingers and slammed into his foot. He spent the rest of the workday in a chair, nursing his toes back to life.

He had cloth gloves, of course, for when he needed to keep his grip, but either they were still too slippery or they chafed the skin of his hands. He considered asking Erin to make him gloves that were cloth lined with silk, but the boy had enough work to do and it would have made Erin wonder why, exactly, his friend was wearing the gloves in the first place.

So he just got used to the satin, and eventually he learned how to hold things so that they were far less likely to fall from his fingers. Only then did he begin to realize the other problem.

Quite simply, everything felt like satin – it could be slimy, or rough, or any of a million other textures, and all he felt were the slightest changes in the texture of the glove. There was a layer between him and the world, and he came to long to feel something harsh again. When he took up sewing for that brief while, the fact he had to take his gloves off to work on them actually was a relief – the cold hardness of the needle was a welcome change.

But for the most part he had to keep the gloves on, and so that barrier remained. One day it hit him that he had never actually felt Erin's skin. He tried to imagine it that night, running one hand over the other, but he knew that Erin would be infinitely softer and warmer than he could ever be. He began to wish that Erin would reach up and touch his cheek – just so he could feel that soft skin.

When Erin finally did touch his hand, though, he was far too worried to even notice. After all, the chance was high that the boy would leave after he saw his hands for the first time. And then he was alone, and the pain was too great to think about gloves or skin.

It wasn't until that night that he realized that Erin's skin was actually a little harder than his. (Calluses from sewing, he suspected.)

But it was still so much warmer.
